Germany Approves Eurofighter Jet Exports to Turkey

Wed 23rd Jul, 2025

In a significant move, the German government has authorized the export of Eurofighter combat aircraft to Turkey, following a lengthy deliberation period. This decision was confirmed by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius, who stated that the Ministry of Defense has sent a formal confirmation to the Turkish government regarding the approval of the export.

The Turkish administration is now tasked with deciding whether to proceed with the purchase of 40 Eurofighter jets, which are assembled in the United Kingdom. Germany plays a crucial role in this European joint project and, as such, must provide its consent for the transaction.

Exporting military equipment to Turkey, a NATO ally, has been a contentious issue in Germany, primarily due to concerns over human rights in Turkey and the country's international policies under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Following Turkey's military intervention in Syria in 2016, Germany significantly restricted arms export licenses to Turkey, reducing them to low double-digit or even single-digit million euros annually.

However, under the current coalition government, arms exports to Turkey have markedly increased over the past year. In September 2024, Germany's Ministry of Economic Affairs, led by Green Party politician Robert Habeck, announced that licenses for the export of torpedoes, guided missiles, and components for submarines had been approved for Turkey in larger quantities.

This latest agreement marks a notable shift in Germany's approach to arms exports to Turkey, reflecting a broader trend of increased military cooperation. The potential deal has raised eyebrows and ignited debate within Germany, as the implications of such military support could reverberate through the region.

As the Turkish government weighs its options regarding the Eurofighter purchase, the international community will be closely monitoring the developments, particularly concerning the geopolitical ramifications of strengthened military ties between Germany and Turkey.
