Gipsy Kings: "Music Is a Natural Way of Life"

A CDU official from Saxony-Anhalt has reportedly made a significant financial contribution to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and publicly urged voters to support the party ahead of the upcoming state elections. This incident has triggered a debate within German political circles and prompted calls for action from major parties.
According to reports, Bernd Prange, a transport company owner and CDU representative on the district council in Stendal, donated a total of 10,000 euros to the AfD in two installments. The AfD has confirmed receiving the donation. Prange, who also serves as a local mayor in the Seehausen municipality, explained his decision as stemming from concerns over what he perceives to be a leftward shift in the CDU's political stance. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current direction of his party, stating that traditional conservative values were no longer adequately represented.
In a letter to party leadership, Prange criticized the CDU's approach to cooperation with left-wing groups and the increasing distance the party maintains from the AfD. He asserted that he wanted to provoke his expulsion from the CDU, citing a loss of identification with the party's values and leadership. Prange further stated that he intends to vote for the AfD in the upcoming state election and encouraged other conservatives to consider doing the same, in hopes of shifting the CDU's direction.
The donation and public endorsement have drawn sharp criticism from CDU officials. The party's state secretary in Saxony-Anhalt described Prange's actions as serious and indicated that the party is considering disciplinary measures, including expulsion. The CDU emphasized that individuals who no longer share its core values are not obligated to remain members.
Reactions have also emerged from the national political landscape. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has demanded a clear and immediate response from the CDU, stressing that supporting the AfD undermines democratic principles. SPD representatives characterized the incident as a significant breach of party discipline and called on the CDU to reaffirm its commitment to distancing itself from the AfD, which is classified by the state's Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a far-right organization.
Polling ahead of the September election shows the AfD leading in voter support, with the party aiming to secure the position of state premier. The current coalition of CDU, SPD, and FDP does not appear to have sufficient backing to continue governing. One potential post-election scenario involves a CDU-led minority government tolerated by The Left, raising further debate among party leaders and political commentators.
The case has reignited discussions within the CDU regarding its political direction, alliances, and the so-called 'firewall' policy, which rules out cooperation with the AfD. Party leadership has repeatedly stated that no collaboration with either The Left or the AfD is planned, though questions remain about possible arrangements after the election.
This development is viewed as significant by political observers, reflecting broader tensions within Germany's conservative bloc over how to respond to the rise of the AfD and evolving voter preferences. As the election approaches, the CDU faces pressure to clarify its position while maintaining party unity and upholding democratic standards.
