Matthew Dowd Departures MSNBC Following Controversial Comments

Thu 11th Sep, 2025

Political analyst Matthew Dowd has parted ways with MSNBC following remarks he made on-air regarding the recent violent incident involving conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Dowd's comments, which suggested a connection between 'hateful words' and 'hateful actions,' sparked significant backlash online.

In a statement released by MSNBC on Thursday, the network confirmed that Dowd is no longer affiliated with them. This decision came in the wake of his comments made shortly after a shooting incident involving Kirk, which Dowd characterized as a divisive figure known for promoting hate speech against specific groups. He emphasized that the current political climate is characterized by a progression from 'hateful thoughts' to 'hateful words' and ultimately 'hateful actions.'

MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler publicly denounced Dowd's remarks, labeling them as 'inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable.' She reiterated the network's stance that violence has no place in American society, regardless of its political context.

In response to the uproar, Dowd took to his Bluesky account to clarify his intentions. He stated that he did not mean to imply that Kirk was responsible for the attack and expressed a desire for unity in condemning all forms of violence. Dowd acknowledged that his tone and choice of words were not suitable for the situation.

Before joining MSNBC in 2022, Dowd had a notable career as a political strategist for former President George W. Bush and made an unsuccessful bid for the position of lieutenant governor in Texas as a Democrat. His tenure at MSNBC was relatively brief, spanning approximately three years, during which he contributed to political discussions and analysis.
