House Oversight Committee Subpoenas Epstein Investigation Files and Key Officials

Tue 5th Aug, 2025

In a significant development, the House Oversight Committee has issued subpoenas to the Justice Department seeking files related to the sex trafficking investigation of Jeffrey Epstein. This inquiry is part of a broader congressional effort to uncover potential connections to former President Donald Trump and various high-ranking officials.

The Republican-led committee has also summoned former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and eight former law enforcement leaders for depositions. This move underscores the ongoing interest in Epstein's case, even while Congress is in recess for the month. Trump has previously denied any knowledge of Epstein's illicit activities and asserts that he severed ties with him long ago. Despite this, both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, along with segments of Trump's supporter base, continue to press for more information.

Since Epstein's death in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial for charges related to sex trafficking, numerous conspiracy theories have emerged regarding the details investigators may have uncovered about his connections with influential figures. Recently, the House Oversight Committee's Republican members indicated their intention to pursue subpoenas involving the Clintons and requested records of all communications between President Joe Biden's administration and the Justice Department concerning Epstein.

Additionally, the committee has requested sworn interviews with former attorneys general from the last three presidential administrations: Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, and Alberto Gonzales. Former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller have also been subpoenaed to provide testimony.

This initiative was sparked by Democrats within the committee who, along with some Republican members, successfully advocated for the subpoena for the Justice Department's files on Epstein. Representative Robert Garcia, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, questioning what Trump may be concealing regarding the Epstein files.

Previously, the committee had requested an interview with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former associate, who was imprisoned in Florida for recruiting underage girls for abuse but has recently been transferred to a facility in Texas. However, the committee's Republican chairman, Representative James Comer, has indicated a willingness to postpone Maxwell's deposition pending the Supreme Court's decision on her appeal regarding her conviction.
