Minnesota Lawmaker Shooting Suspect Planned Broader Attacks, Prosecutors Reveal

Tue 17th Jun, 2025

MINNEAPOLIS - The individual charged with the murder of a Minnesota lawmaker and the wounding of another had a detailed plan that aimed to target multiple officials, according to federal prosecutors. Vance Luther Boelter meticulously prepared for the violent incidents, which included attempts to attack two additional legislators on the same night. However, one of the targets was away on vacation, and law enforcement arrived at the second location shortly before he could execute his plan.

Boelter's actions are part of a disturbing trend of violent political attacks across the United States. Prosecutors revealed that he had compiled a list containing dozens of potential targets, including officials from various states. In Minnesota, he conducted surveillance and took detailed notes on his intended victims. Just prior to the shootings, he disguised himself as a police officer.

Federal prosecutors characterized the events as 'nightmarish,' emphasizing the premeditated nature of Boelter's actions, which included extensive planning over several months. They indicated that he had gathered various notebooks filled with plans, including one that detailed internet resources for finding information about his targets.

Boelter, 57, is accused of fatally shooting former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their residence, as well as shooting State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. Following the shootings, Boelter attempted to evade capture but was ultimately found by police in the woods, where he surrendered.

He faces multiple charges, including murder and stalking, and could potentially face the death penalty if convicted. At a recent federal court hearing, Boelter expressed his inability to afford legal representation, leading to the appointment of a public defender who will represent him without bail until his next court appearance.

Notably, Boelter's writings indicated a broader scope of intended violence, with over 45 state and federal officials in Minnesota listed as potential targets. Lawmakers in surrounding states, including Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, were also mentioned in his notes. Concerns over the safety of lawmakers have escalated, with some, like Democratic Representative Esther Agbaje, noting that they had to take precautions after discovering their names on Boelter's list.

The initial incidents unfolded when Boelter first targeted the Hoffmans in their home. After being confronted, he shot both individuals multiple times. The severity of their injuries was highlighted in a statement from Yvette Hoffman, who indicated that they were both fortunate to survive after sustaining numerous gunshot wounds.

In a chilling text message sent to family members, Boelter referred to his violent actions as 'going to war.' His subsequent behavior, including purchasing a new vehicle shortly after the shootings and possessing weapons and a significant amount of cash, raised further alarms about his intentions.

Law enforcement officials have underscored the possibility that Boelter's rampage could have continued if not for the timely intervention of police officers who checked on the Hortman residence after the initial attack.

The investigation continues, as authorities seek to uncover the motivations behind Boelter's actions. While he targeted Democratic lawmakers, officials have not yet determined a clear ideological motive behind the shootings. Friends and acquaintances have described him as a devout Christian and a former political appointee who participated in local political activities.
