Zuckerberg Predicts AI Will Outperform Developers in Code Writing

Mon 5th May, 2025

In a recent discussion, the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence (AI) will soon surpass human developers in producing high-quality code. He indicated that within the next 12 to 18 months, a significant portion of Meta's programming tasks will be delegated to AI systems. This strategy is part of the company's ongoing efforts to enhance its proprietary Llama language models through specialized AI agents focused on research and development.

Zuckerberg pointed out that while there are already effective applications capable of completing existing code segments, future advancements will enable these AI agents to generate code based on specific objectives set by developers. Furthermore, these AI tools will autonomously conduct tests to identify and rectify errors, leading to a higher standard of code quality. Zuckerberg anticipates that the AI-generated code will surpass that produced by even the most skilled human developers within the organization.

During a conversation with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the Llama Com conference, Zuckerberg estimated that the current proportion of AI-generated code at Meta stands at approximately 50%, although he acknowledged the lack of precise statistics, as some data may include tools designed for automatic code completion. In contrast, Nadella reported that Microsoft currently sees around 20 to 30% of its code being produced by AI, with a growing trend of integrating AI-generated suggestions into their repositories.

Both executives refrained from speculating on whether the rise of AI in programming might lead to job losses in the tech sector. However, a survey indicated that three-quarters of companies in Germany are open to employing AI agents as digital workers.
