Zoo Leipzig Makes Heartbreaking Decision to Euthanize Three Tiger Cubs

Sat 9th Aug, 2025

In a tragic turn of events, Zoo Leipzig announced the euthanasia of three newborn tiger cubs just days after their birth. The decision was made due to the mother, a first-time parent named Yushka, failing to care for her offspring. Zoo officials emphasized the importance of minimizing suffering for the cubs, leading to this difficult choice.

The cubs were born on a Wednesday evening, marking the first litter for Yushka. However, shortly after their birth, the inexperienced mother abandoned them, which is a behavior not uncommon in the animal kingdom, though distressing from a human perspective. Zoo director Jörg Junhold explained that such occurrences, while emotionally challenging, can happen in nature.

During the two days without maternal care, the cubs became increasingly weak and cold. According to veterinarian Andreas Bernhard, when the cubs ceased to show active behaviors, it indicated that they were not receiving the necessary stimulation for maternal care or milk production. At that point, the zoo felt compelled to act responsibly to prevent further suffering from starvation.

Despite this setback, Zoo Leipzig remains committed to the conservation efforts for the Amur tiger species. Plans are in place for continued breeding with Yushka, with hopes that she will successfully raise future cubs in a more nurturing manner. Director Junhold expressed optimism that Yushka will contribute positively to the survival of her species through natural rearing in subsequent attempts.
