Wikipedia Pauses Experiment with AI-Generated Summaries

Thu 12th Jun, 2025

The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to halt a project that aimed to implement AI-generated summaries for Wikipedia articles. The initiative was designed to enhance the accessibility of the online encyclopedia, but significant backlash from the community has led to its suspension.

Initially, the plan involved testing AI-generated summaries on a small segment of Wikipedia's mobile visitors, with the goal of assessing their impact and gathering feedback from Wikipedia contributors. However, after receiving considerable criticism, the Wikimedia team announced a change of direction.

The project aimed to make Wikipedia more user-friendly, as past efforts to simplify content had met with limited success. For instance, previous attempts to provide articles in simpler English required significant effort from authors who needed to rewrite existing texts in a more accessible manner.

In preliminary tests, the AI-generated summaries garnered surprisingly positive reactions, with users expressing a level of trust in the content. Importantly, the Wikimedia Foundation emphasized that all AI-generated summaries would undergo human review before publication.

Despite the project's temporary suspension, the term "yuck" surfaced in discussions among community members, reflecting concerns about the potential risks of incorporating AI-generated content into the Wikipedia platform. Critics pointed to the inherent error-proneness of AI systems and raised alarms about the threat such inaccuracies posed to Wikipedia's reputation. Furthermore, there were complaints regarding the lack of prior communication about the project.

In response to the community's concerns, the Wikimedia Foundation acknowledged the need for further dialogue and indicated that while the project is not entirely abandoned, they will take the feedback into account before proceeding. The organization intends to revisit the topic in the near future.

As for the limited experiment that had already taken place, the generated AI summaries are available for review on GitHub. The Wikimedia Foundation had previously disclosed the significant resources required to train AI technologies for use within their platform, highlighting that the data scrapers utilized for training placed a different strain on the site compared to human users. This issue has led to increased risks and costs without delivering substantial benefits, as noted by the organization.

In the meantime, Wikimedia has introduced AI tools intended to assist moderators in managing content more effectively. The ongoing exploration of AI applications in Wikipedia continues as the organization seeks to balance innovation with community trust and expectations.
