Violence Erupts in Syria: Dozens Killed in Druse-Sunni Clashes

Mon 14th Jul, 2025

Recent clashes in Syria have resulted in significant casualties, as reports indicate that dozens of individuals have lost their lives amid violent confrontations between armed groups in the southern province of Suwaida. Activists have confirmed that at least 27 members of the Druse community and ten Bedouins have died, while more than 50 others have sustained injuries. The Syrian Interior Ministry has reported a minimum of 30 fatalities and over 100 injuries, prompting government security forces to intervene directly in an attempt to quell the violence.

The unrest has been attributed to a robbery incident involving a young Druse individual, which occurred on the highway connecting Damascus and Suwaida. Eyewitness accounts from local residents suggest that armed Druse groups engaged in fierce battles with Sunni Bedouin tribes within the city of Suwaida, which serves as the provincial capital for the predominantly Druse region.

Reports indicate that the fighting has primarily concentrated in the Maqwas neighborhood, inhabited by Bedouin tribes, where armed Druse factions encircled and ultimately seized control of the area. Conversely, Bedouin forces have launched attacks on Druse territories situated along the western and northern outskirts of the city.

The escalation of violence highlights the fragile security situation in Syria, particularly following the ousting of long-time leader Bashar al-Assad by the Islamist rebel group HTS in December 2024. The leader of HTS, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has since declared himself president and established a transitional government, but the presence of numerous armed factions continues to pose a threat to stability.

Many religious minorities, including the Druse, are increasingly anxious about their safety amid the ongoing turmoil. Although President Sharaa has promised protection for these communities, the recent outbreak of violence has raised concerns about the effectiveness of his assurances.

As the situation in Suwaida unfolds, the international community remains watchful, with calls for urgent measures to restore peace and security in the region.
