Vatican Prepares for World Youth Day with 1,000 Priests for Outdoor Confession

Wed 23rd Jul, 2025

The Vatican is gearing up to host the upcoming World Youth Day, anticipating the arrival of at least half a million young participants from 146 countries. The event, scheduled from July 28 to August 3, poses logistical challenges, particularly due to the expected heat during this period.

To accommodate the spiritual needs of attendees, the Vatican has mobilized over 1,000 priests to conduct outdoor confessions in the historic Circus Maximus. During the event, groups of 200 priests will rotate every two hours to manage the flow of confessions effectively, as outlined by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who oversees the Holy Year events.

This extensive confession opportunity is just one highlight among many planned activities at the World Youth Day. The Vatican is expecting a diverse turnout, with around two-thirds of participants arriving from Europe. Various local events are set to occur across the city, alongside a special gathering for Catholic influencers at the start of the week.

One of the main highlights will be a large open-air celebration at Tor Vergata, where Pope Leo XIV is expected to make an appearance. The site, previously used for the event in 2000, has undergone significant renovations, amounting to an investment of approximately 80 million euros, to improve infrastructure, including roads and parking.

The program will feature live music performances and international presenters, culminating in a religious service on the evening of August 2. Participants will spend the night in sleeping bags under the stars before attending the Mass with the Pope on Sunday morning.

Given the scale of the event, security measures are being heightened. A no-fly zone will be established over the venue, supplemented by drone defense systems. Additionally, around 1,000 security personnel and approximately 3,000 volunteers from the civil protection agency will be on-site to ensure safety.

To monitor the event, 122 cameras will be utilized, and medical assistance will be readily available, featuring ten first aid stations, 43 ambulances, and designated helicopter landing areas. A team of psychologists will also be present to address any mental health concerns.

Logistical arrangements are complex, given the distance of the venue from downtown Rome, which is about 17 kilometers away. Special buses will transport attendees to Tor Vergata, where thousands of volunteers will be prepared to assist them. The expansive site will provide 2,760 chemical toilets, including 158 units accessible for individuals with disabilities.

To combat the summer heat, organizers are implementing measures to ensure hydration, including the installation of 2,660 drinking water stations and the provision of five million bottles of water. Additionally, 70 misting stations will be set up to help attendees stay cool during the event.
