Vandalism at Humboldt University: Anti-Israel Messages Prominently Displayed

Mon 19th May, 2025

Humboldt University in Berlin has recently been targeted by vandals who defaced its buildings with anti-Israel slogans and symbols associated with Hamas. According to police reports, the Institute for Social Sciences was among the hardest hit, with large graffiti messages appearing on its walls.

The university's main building, particularly the side entrance, was marked with phrases such as 'Yallah intifada' and 'If Gaza burns, Berlin burns,' alongside graffiti resembling Hamas insignia and splashes of red paint. A spokesperson from the university confirmed that measures are being taken to remove these messages as swiftly as possible, and an official report has been filed with the authorities.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the vandalism occurred during the night or early hours of Monday. The Landeskriminalamt (State Criminal Police Office) is currently looking into the incident.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar event that took place nearly a year ago, when the Institute for Social Sciences was occupied by pro-Palestinian activists, resulting in significant damage to the property. In that instance as well, walls, doors, and offices were vandalized, particularly in the upper floors where the activists had taken refuge.

The ongoing protests supporting Palestinian rights at Berlin's universities have drawn considerable attention, and this latest act of vandalism is likely to reignite discussions surrounding the tension between pro-Palestinian sentiments and anti-Semitic expressions.

The Berlin police have classified the slogans and symbols used in this incident as anti-Semitic, highlighting the serious implications of such actions in the current socio-political climate. As investigations continue, the university community and the broader public are urged to reflect on the impact of these events on societal dialogue and harmony.
