US Military Eliminates Senior ISIS Leader in Syria

The ongoing violence and chaotic situation in Syria continue to benefit the Islamic State (ISIS), prompting the US military to target a prominent figure within the group. According to reports from the US Central Command, a significant leader of ISIS, identified as Dhija Sauba Musli al-Hardani, has been killed in an operation near Aleppo. Alongside him, his two sons, who were also affiliated with ISIS, were reportedly eliminated due to their potential threat to US forces and allied troops, as well as to the newly established Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Scharaa.

Approximately 2,000 US soldiers are currently stationed in Syria, primarily focused on combating ISIS. Over the years, the US military has conducted numerous airstrikes and ground operations targeting high-ranking ISIS officials.

While ISIS was once able to control large territories in both Syria and Iraq, it is now considered militarily defeated. However, estimates suggest that around 2,500 ISIS fighters are still active in both countries, often hiding in sparsely populated regions. They continue to exploit the unstable and tumultuous environment that has persisted since the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.

There have been conflicting reports regarding the extent to which the US military coordinated this operation with the new government in Damascus, which currently holds control over the city of Al-Bab, the site of the recent military action. ISIS strongly opposes the new Syrian government, particularly due to its rapprochement with Turkey and Western nations. The promises made by President al-Scharaa to establish democratic frameworks are viewed by ISIS as a deviation from Islamic law (Sharia) and a betrayal of their beliefs.
