US Imposes Travel Ban on Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner Amid Corruption Allegations

Sat 22nd Mar, 2025

The United States has enacted a travel ban against Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the former president of Argentina, in response to allegations of corruption. The decision also extends to Julio Miguel De Vido, a former minister in her administration.

Fernandez de Kirchner served as Argentina's president for two terms from 2007 to 2015 and later held the position of vice president under Alberto Fernandez until the recent election of Javier Milei. In a statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that both Fernandez de Kirchner and De Vido had exploited their governmental roles to orchestrate bribery schemes concerning public works contracts, resulting in the misappropriation of millions in government funds.

Rubio noted that the former president and her family members are now deemed ineligible for entry into the United States due to their credible involvement in significant corruption under US law. The announcement marks a notable escalation in the ongoing legal scrutiny faced by Fernandez de Kirchner.

In her response, Fernandez de Kirchner suggested that the current Argentine president, Javier Milei, influenced the US decision, implying a political motive behind the travel ban. She has been a fierce opponent of Milei, a libertarian who has garnered support from various international allies, including US President Donald Trump.

Despite her legal challenges, Fernandez de Kirchner maintains a substantial political presence in Argentina. Her reputation, however, has suffered due to a series of legal battles. In 2022, a judicial panel found her guilty of awarding approximately $1 billion in public contracts to preferred contractors without a competitive bidding process. This case involved both her and her late husband, Nestor Kirchner, who also served as president from 2003 to 2007.

In a 2024 ruling, her conviction was upheld, leading to a six-year prison sentence and disqualification from holding public office. Currently, she is appealing this decision to the country's highest court, which has yet to rule on her case.

The situation continues to unfold as Fernandez de Kirchner's supporters and critics watch closely, with implications for Argentina's political landscape and its relationship with the United States.
