Union Prioritizes Thoroughness Over Speed in Coalition Negotiations

Mon 24th Mar, 2025

The coalition negotiations between the Union and the SPD are encountering significant hurdles, particularly regarding key issues such as immigration and citizen income. The timeline for establishing a new government by Easter remains uncertain.

Following the conclusion of the working group phase in the coalition discussions, the Union has identified substantial differences and is cautioning against undue pressure to accelerate the process. Thorsten Frei, the Parliamentary Manager of the Union faction in the Bundestag, emphasized that there are divergent perspectives on both migration and broader domestic policy matters. However, he expressed optimism that compromises could still be reached.

Frei articulated that it is premature to make definitive statements at this stage, as negotiations are ongoing and will likely require considerable effort. He noted that there is no strict timetable for the discussions, underscoring that thoroughness is more critical than speed. The goal is to methodically address outstanding issues, ensuring that a solid foundation is laid for a successful government.

As the negotiations transition to their next phase, Frei assured that the Union is committed to negotiating its priorities assertively and diligently, which is essential in coalition talks. The working groups are expected to submit their findings by 5 PM, after which the material will be reviewed and consolidated. Any unresolved matters will be discussed in smaller groups.

Initially, it was anticipated that final questions would be resolved in the first week of April. CDU Chair Friedrich Merz had aimed for the formation of a black-red government by Easter, but the current circumstances suggest a more cautious approach may be necessary.
