Union Berlin Executive Advocates for Enhanced Flexibility in Bundesliga Scheduling

Tue 2nd Sep, 2025

In a recent discussion, Jennifer Zietz, managing director of Union Berlin, expressed the need for increased flexibility in the scheduling of Bundesliga matches, particularly for the women's league. Zietz highlighted that the current scheduling practices do not adequately accommodate fans, especially families and students.

As the Eisernen Ladies gear up for their inaugural match in the top league against 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday at 6:30 PM, Zietz pointed out the challenges associated with a Sunday evening kickoff. She noted that this timing is not ideal as it coincides with the start of the school week, creating difficulties for families and young fans.

Zietz called for more innovative scheduling options, suggesting that the league should consider introducing conference matches and varying kickoff times to enhance accessibility for supporters. She remarked on the missed opportunities that arise from not being bold enough in scheduling, particularly regarding the potential to attract larger audiences.

Union Berlin has reported strong ticket sales, with 5,000 tickets sold so far and the hope of reaching 8,000 attendees. This is particularly significant given that over 20,000 fans attended their last match in the second division, illustrating a growing interest in women's football.

The women's Bundesliga typically avoids scheduling conflicts by spacing matches across four days, from Friday night to Monday evening. However, Zietz noted that when the scheduling agreements were established, they may not have anticipated the current surge in fan engagement.

As the league continues to evolve, Zietz's comments underscore a broader conversation about the importance of adapting to the needs of fans and ensuring that match timings are conducive to maximizing attendance and engagement.
