Union Berlin Announces Departure of Five Players, Including Ilic and Jeong

Fri 9th May, 2025

In a significant shake-up ahead of the final Bundesliga home match against 1. FC Heidenheim, 1. FC Union Berlin has confirmed that five players will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Among those departing are left-back Jerome Roussillon and backup goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow. Additionally, the loan agreements for striker Andrej Ilic and midfielder Wooyeong Jeong will conclude, while forward Kevin Volland is set to return to his youth club, 1860 Munich.

While the exits of Volland, Roussillon, and Schwolow were anticipated due to their limited contributions this season, the departures of Ilic and Jeong are expected to resonate more deeply with the team and its supporters. Both players joined Union Berlin last summer and quickly made their mark within the squad.

Andrej Ilic has particularly impressed, having established himself under head coach Steffen Baumgart, making ten appearances in the starting lineup and scoring five goals, making him the second-highest scorer for the club. His performance has drawn attention, and rumors suggest that high transfer fees may have prevented a permanent move to Berlin.

Meanwhile, Wooyeong Jeong's season has been marred by a recent ankle injury, which limited his appearances. He will be returning to VfB Stuttgart after his stint in Berlin. The club will now look to fill the gaps left by these key players as they plan for the upcoming season.

As Union prepares for the final match, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how these changes impact the team's dynamics going forward.
