Trump Questions Finnish President on Trusting Putin Amid Ongoing Ukraine Talks

Mon 31st Mar, 2025

In recent discussions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly expressed uncertainty regarding trust in Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. This meeting occurred amidst stalled negotiations between the United States and Russia aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to reports, Trump's inquiry into Putin's reliability raises questions about his understanding of the ongoing dynamics with Russia. Stubb, who is known for his pro-European stance and support for Ukraine, recounted that during their lengthy conversation, Trump questioned whether he could trust the Russian leader. Stubb responded firmly, indicating that trust in Putin is misplaced.

During the meeting, Stubb attempted to clarify what he described as typical Russian negotiation tactics, where initial agreements may later be altered by Russia. He emphasized that Putin's intentions do not align with a genuine desire for peace, suggesting instead a strategy aimed at undermining Ukraine.

Stubb has previously stated in interviews that Putin's objectives are far from peaceful, claiming that the Russian leader seeks to obliterate the Ukrainian state. This sentiment aligns with broader international perceptions of Putin's actions since the onset of the conflict.

As part of their discussions, Stubb advocated for a ceasefire and proposed April 20 as a potential date for a truce. However, the only agreement reached between Ukraine and Russia so far, under U.S. mediation, has been a limited commitment to refrain from attacking specific energy infrastructure. Accusations of violations of this agreement have been exchanged by both sides since.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, achieving a halt to hostilities in the Black Sea remains elusive, primarily due to Russia's demand for the lifting of Western sanctions as a precondition for any ceasefire. Observers have criticized Putin for employing delaying tactics during negotiations. This includes military experts and officials within the European Union who have voiced skepticism about the Kremlin's sincerity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the situation, suggesting that Putin is repeating strategies he has used since 2014, when he first annexed Crimea.

In the U.S., Trump has taken a hardline stance regarding Ukraine, recently warning Zelenskyy of severe consequences should Ukraine withdraw from agreements related to rare earth minerals. This follows a history of Trump suspending military aid to the Ukrainian government.

While Trump has expressed his frustration with Putin in recent interviews, describing himself as 'very angry' with the Russian leader's ambitions to replace Ukraine's legitimate government, his administration has yet to implement significant new sanctions against Russia. Trump has hinted at potential sanctions targeting Russia's oil industry and indicated plans for further discussions with Putin in the near future.
