Trial Begins for Alleged Right-Wing Extremists in Berlin Assault Case

Wed 7th May, 2025

A trial is set to commence on Wednesday at the Tiergarten District Court in Berlin concerning an assault on members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) during the Bundestag election campaign. Four individuals, aged between 17 and 20, face serious charges including aggravated bodily harm and assault on police officers.

The incident occurred on December 14, 2024, when the defendants traveled from Saxony-Anhalt to participate in a demonstration aligned with far-right ideologies. Investigations have revealed that these individuals are linked to a youth group known for its violent tendencies and extremist beliefs.

While in the Lichterfelde district, the accused encountered two SPD campaigners--a man and his wife--at an information stand set up for the elections. Reports indicate that the campaigners were harassed and subsequently attacked. The male campaigner was pushed to the ground and kicked, with one of the assailants reportedly wearing combat boots during the assault. Following the initial attack, the defendants also confronted responding police officers.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the rise of right-wing extremism in Germany, and it underscores the potential dangers faced by political activists during election campaigns. The prosecution is expected to present evidence over the course of two scheduled court days.
