Transition from Skype to Teams: User Experiences and Account Balance Concerns

Sat 10th May, 2025

Microsoft has officially phased out Skype, leaving users to navigate significant changes in communication technology. Following a recent update, users are expressing dissatisfaction with the abrupt transition and are questioning the fate of their prepaid balances.

As of this week, Microsoft has implemented a software update that disables Skype clients on Windows and macOS, effectively forcing users to migrate to Teams. Upon installing the 'recommended' update, users can no longer access their previous Skype data and are prompted to launch the Teams client instead. A message within the app acknowledges the transition, stating that Skype has been retired.

For users on mobile devices, the situation is similar, as they are also directed to Teams without any means to retrieve their old chats or contacts from Skype.

Challenges with the New Interface

When accessing Teams, users encounter a new interface that significantly differs from Skype. Many find it confusing, as features are not intuitively placed, necessitating a closer examination to understand where functions are located. Notably, the ability to make landline calls, a long-standing feature of Skype, has been shifted to a web-based platform. This means that users must navigate away from Teams to a browser to make calls, complicating the process further.

The so-called 'Dial-Pad' for making calls is not readily visible and is hidden within the settings, requiring users to log in with their Skype credentials despite being logged into Teams. This disjointed experience raises concerns about the overall user experience and efficiency.

Making Calls: A Complicated Process

Users attempting to make calls through the web interface have reported mixed success. Initial attempts may lead to frustrating experiences, such as being unable to connect after dialing. However, once users successfully navigate the process, they can see the cost associated with their calls, much like they did with the original Skype app.

Incoming Skype calls can still be received directly in Teams, allowing for a seamless communication experience if users have the application set up correctly. However, functionalities like SMS messaging have been entirely removed, leaving users with fewer options than before.

Account Balances: What Users Need to Know

One of the most pressing concerns for users is the status of their Skype account balances. Initially, it was unclear whether Microsoft would allow users to withdraw their remaining funds. Current information suggests that balances must be utilized before any refund can be considered. Microsoft has indicated that refunds may be possible under certain conditions, but these policies appear to favor more recent transactions.

For users who purchased credits or subscriptions long before the transition, there is no option for reimbursement. Instead, they are left to deplete their balances through the now-restricted Dial-Pad feature. This situation raises questions about the longevity of this feature as Microsoft may need to maintain it until no users have outstanding balances.

Moreover, subscriptions associated with Skype phone numbers will expire at the end of their contractual terms, and Microsoft has confirmed that renewals will not be offered. After this period, users will only be reachable through Teams, omitting traditional phone access altogether.
