Tragic Bus Accident in Peru Claims 15 Lives

A devastating bus accident occurred on a highway in the Andes Mountains of Peru, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals and injuring around 30 others. The incident took place as a bus traveling from Lima to La Merced veered off the road and plunged into a ravine in the district of Palca.

The local health director, Clifor Curipaco, reported that the bus, operated by Expreso Molina Líder Internacional, was carrying over 60 passengers when it tragically overturned and landed on its roof beside a river. Authorities are currently in the process of identifying the deceased, as confirmed by Aldo Tineo, a health official from Tarma.

Unfortunately, bus accidents of this nature are not uncommon in Peru. Earlier this year, another bus fell into a river, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuries to 32 others. In 2024 alone, approximately 3,173 traffic-related fatalities were recorded in the country, highlighting a significant issue with road safety.

According to a report from the Attorney General's Office, reckless driving and excessive speed are identified as primary factors contributing to road accidents in Peru. Poor road conditions further exacerbate this dangerous situation, prompting authorities to investigate the underlying causes of this recent tragedy.

Local media outlets have circulated footage of the crash site, revealing the extent of the damage to the bus, which appeared to be split in two. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this catastrophic event and working towards improving safety measures to prevent future incidents.
