Tragic Alligator Attack Claims Woman's Life in Florida

A serene canoe trip turned into a nightmare when an alligator attacked and killed a woman in Florida, witnessed by her husband. The incident occurred near the confluence of Tiger Creek and Lake Kissimmee, situated south of Orlando.

The couple was paddling through shallow waters, approximately 75 centimeters deep, when the encounter with the alligator took a deadly turn. Reports indicate that the canoe may have passed directly over the alligator, causing it to react defensively. This reaction resulted in the canoe capsizing, leading to a dramatic struggle for survival.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the husband attempted to fend off the alligator in a desperate bid to save his wife, but his efforts were in vain. Initial reports did not clarify if the husband sustained any injuries during the ordeal. The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Cynthia Diekema from Davenport, Florida.

Authorities later captured a 3.3-meter-long alligator believed to be involved in the attack, alongside another large alligator that could also be a suspect in the tragic event. Alligator attacks are not uncommon in Florida, with the state recording a total of 487 unprovoked bites since tracking began in 1948. Among these incidents, 339 were serious injuries and 27 resulted in fatalities.

The last fatal alligator attack in Florida occurred in February 2023, when an 85-year-old woman was killed while walking her dog near a pond in Fort Pierce. Earlier in the same year, a 23-year-old man lost an arm in an attack at a pond behind a bar in Port Charlotte.

Springtime tends to see an increase in alligator encounters as they become more active during their mating season. Florida is home to an estimated 1.3 million alligators, making interactions with these reptiles more likely.
