Trins, Austria - A series of tragic incidents in the Austrian Alps has resulted in the deaths of two German tourists. The first fatality involved a 71-year-old man who fell to his death in the Stubaier Alps, while a 49-year-old woman lost her life after plunging down a waterfall during a family outing near the Zugspitze.
The first incident occurred on Monday when hikers ascending the challenging Hammerspitz trail discovered an unattended backpack. Concerned for the owner's safety, they alerted authorities. Rescue teams, including the police helicopter 'Libelle', soon located the body of the man in a steep ravine. Despite efforts from a medical professional who was lowered to the site, the man was declared dead at the scene. His identity was later confirmed; he hailed from Lichtenstein in the Zwickau district of Saxony, Germany.
The recovery of the body was delayed until the following day due to deteriorating light conditions, highlighting the dangers inherent in alpine hiking.
In a separate incident in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, a family outing turned deadly when a woman, aged 49, was swept away by strong currents while attempting to bathe in a mountain stream. This tragic event unfolded in front of her children as the family was part of a guided hiking group on their way to the Reintalangerhütte with plans to summit the Zugspitze the following day. In a desperate attempt to save her, her 48-year-old husband jumped into the water but was also caught in the cascade. He sustained serious injuries in the fall.
The mountain guide present managed to escape the water, and a crisis intervention team was deployed to assist the witnesses of this horrifying incident. Sadly, the woman succumbed to her injuries from the fall.
The increasing popularity of outdoor activities has placed additional pressures on rescue services, particularly during the warmer months. Last summer, the mountain rescue teams in Bavaria responded to a staggering 3,640 emergency calls, underscoring the risks associated with alpine excursions.
