Traffic Unimpeded at Pomellen Despite Polish Border Controls

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

The recent implementation of border checks by Poland at the Pomellen crossing has not resulted in significant traffic disruptions. Reports indicate that vehicles moved smoothly on the A11 highway towards Szczecin, with checks primarily taking place at a gas station parking area rather than on the highway itself.

Authorities conducted random inspections rather than stopping every vehicle. Traffic heading into Germany was also reported to be flowing without major issues. German customs officials have set up a checkpoint to redirect vehicles, although not all were stopped for inspection.

Since midnight, Polish officials have been conducting checks at 52 border crossings, as announced by the Polish Interior Ministry on social media. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, checks were also performed at Ahlbeck on Usedom Island, where primarily motorhomes and delivery vehicles were inspected. A container was positioned at a bus turnaround point for these checks.

The border controls, which are a response to similar measures taken by Germany, have been put in place as a means to manage irregular migration. Germany has been conducting sporadic border checks since October 2023 to address this issue.

Following the establishment of a new German government in May, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt mandated stricter border controls. This includes the authority to turn back asylum seekers at the border, a topic that has stirred significant discussion in Poland.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the balance between national security and the free movement of individuals across borders in the region.
