Tourist Fatally Attacked While Feeding Bears in Romania

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

A tragic incident occurred in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, where an Italian tourist lost his life after attempting to feed a brown bear. The 48-year-old man, identified as Omar Z., had been riding his motorcycle along the popular Transfagarasan highway, known for its stunning curves and breathtaking views.

Authorities reported that the tourist had developed a dangerous habit, common among some visitors, of feeding wild bears. This practice has led to the animals losing their natural fear of humans, prompting the installation of numerous warning signs along the route.

On the day of the incident, Omar Z. reportedly stopped his motorcycle near one of these warning signs and got off to offer food to the bear. Witnesses revealed that he had taken several photographs and videos with the bear before the attack, including selfies taken just days prior. It is believed that he was encouraging the bear to approach him, unaware of the imminent danger.

Eyewitnesses recounted hearing the man express excitement as the bear approached, seemingly unaware of the risks involved. Tragically, the bear attacked him, dragging him into the nearby woods. Other motorists who witnessed the event quickly called emergency services.

Despite a rapid response from approximately 40 rescue personnel, including some armed responders, they arrived only to find that the man had succumbed to his injuries. In an effort to protect themselves and others, authorities euthanized the bear, which was initially thought to be a mother bear defending her cubs.

This incident highlights a growing trend among tourists in the region, where at least three other individuals have been attacked by bears in the past month due to similar reckless behavior. Notably, a 75-year-old woman from Spain was hospitalized after an encounter that resulted in severe injuries.

Local wildlife officials are urging tourists to respect the natural behaviors of these animals and avoid feeding them. The dangers of such interactions are significant, both for human safety and for the bears themselves, as they become accustomed to human presence and food.
