Tino Sorge Emerges as Potential Successor to Health Minister Lauterbach

Mon 31st Mar, 2025

The political landscape in Germany is witnessing a significant shift, with Tino Sorge, a prominent figure in the CDU's health policy, being considered as the next Federal Minister of Health. Sorge, who has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013, gained parliamentary entry via the state list of Sachsen-Anhalt after failing to secure a direct mandate in his electoral district of Magdeburg.

Over the years, Sorge has honed his expertise in health policy, serving as the health policy spokesperson for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group during the previous legislative period. Since 2017, he has also been a member of the leadership board of the CDU/CSU faction.

Recently, Sorge has advocated for the improvement of the economic conditions of local pharmacies. He emphasized the need for adjustments in fixed payments and flexibility within the profession, as well as better integration of pharmacies into local healthcare systems. His comments during a February meeting with pharmacists in Magdeburg highlighted his commitment to securing the operational foundation of pharmacies and enhancing the attractiveness of the pharmacy profession.

These topics align with the points outlined in the health working group's results, where Sorge played a key role in negotiations on behalf of the CDU. His candidacy for the health minister position is viewed positively by pharmacy representatives, although the final distribution of ministerial posts remains uncertain, with the possibility of unexpected changes.

In the broader context of coalition negotiations, should a partnership form between the Union and the SPD, Friedrich Merz of the CDU is set to become the tenth Chancellor of Germany. There are speculations that Thorsten Frei may support him in the Chancellor's office.

As for the foreign ministry, Johann Wadephul is being considered for the role, but other candidates like former CDU leader Armin Laschet and veteran foreign policy figure Norbert Röttgen are also in the mix.

The outcome of these negotiations and the eventual cabinet appointments will be closely monitored, as they will set the tone for Germany's health policies and legislative direction in the coming years.
