Franziska Giffey, the former mayor of Berlin, has indicated that she is not ruling out the possibility of running as the leading candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the upcoming election for the Berlin House of Representatives in 2026. In an interview, Giffey emphasized her current role as both Mayor and Senator for Economic Affairs, noting that her focus is on effectively coordinating the SPD's performance within the regional government.
The parliamentary election is scheduled for September 20, 2026, and the SPD is tasked with determining its candidate for the position of Spitzenkandidat in the forthcoming months. Giffey's statement comes amidst speculation about various potential candidates, including the party's parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh, who is also perceived to have ambitions for the top spot.
In addition to Saleh, other prominent names being discussed include party co-chairs Martin Hikel and Nicola Böcker-Ginanni. Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe has also been mentioned as a possible contender, along with the option of considering an external candidate outside the current local party leadership.
Giffey remarked on the significance of the Spitzenkandidatur, stating that it is a responsibility that only a select few can manage effectively. She acknowledged that the pool of suitable candidates is typically limited, emphasizing the importance of selecting someone who commands broad support across the entire party to enhance the chances of electoral success.
Reflecting on her previous tenure and decisions made, Giffey shared that stepping away from a coalition with the Greens and the Left party in favor of a partnership with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was a challenging yet necessary choice. She referred to her time in the Red City Hall as a cherished experience, describing it as the ideal setting for political engagement. Despite the difficulties of her decision, she believes it was essential given the political climate and the need to maintain integrity within the government.
Giffey also dismissed rumors regarding a potential transition to the federal government, clarifying that her commitment lies with Berlin. She had participated actively in coalition discussions to advocate for the city and its eastern regions, which underscored her dedication to local governance.
