Trump and Zelensky Set for Key Meeting at G7 Summit

Mon 16th Jun, 2025

As world leaders gather in Canada for the G7 summit, a significant bilateral discussion is planned between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This meeting is anticipated to focus on the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine and the broader geopolitical landscape involving Russia.

The G7 summit, commencing on Monday, will address various pressing global issues, with particular emphasis on the military tensions between Israel and Iran. However, the situation in Ukraine is expected to be a central topic of discussion, especially given the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

In advance of the summit, President Zelensky has urged G7 nations to adopt a firmer stance against Russia. He highlighted the ongoing assaults by Russian forces on civilian energy infrastructure in Ukraine, despite assurances from Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding peace efforts. Zelensky's participation at the summit is viewed as a crucial opportunity to rally support for Ukraine, seeking increased military and financial assistance to bolster the country's defenses.

The upcoming meeting between Trump and Zelensky is especially noteworthy given their previous encounter, which ended in controversy. In April, during a meeting at the Vatican, the two leaders engaged in discussions that followed a tumultuous visit by Zelensky to the White House earlier in the year. That visit had culminated in a public disagreement, resulting in Zelensky departing the meeting prematurely without securing a critical agreement on resource allocations.

Trump's approach toward Ukraine has shifted significantly since his inauguration, with a reduction in military support compared to prior administrations. His administration has sought to re-establish dialogue with Moscow, attempting to reduce tensions and find common ground. However, despite these efforts, a definitive resolution to the conflict remains elusive.

The G7 summit represents a pivotal moment for Ukraine, as Zelensky aims to leverage the platform to gain further backing from leading democratic economies in the ongoing fight against Russian aggression. The discussions are expected to influence future strategies regarding international support for Ukraine and the global response to Russian military actions.
