Alaa M., a Syrian physician, has been sentenced to life in prison by the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court for committing crimes against humanity. This ruling follows an extensive trial lasting nearly three and a half years, during which the court examined evidence of severe human rights violations attributed to the defendant, who was an assistant physician in Syria.
The court's decision, announced on June 16, 2025, included a finding of particularly grave guilt, which mandates preventive detention. According to the presiding judge, Christoph Koller, the actions of Alaa M. resulted in serious injuries to nine individuals and the deaths of two others. The prosecution had presented over 50 witness testimonies and numerous expert analyses to substantiate its case against him.
During the trial, the prosecution detailed horrific allegations against M., asserting that he had participated in the torture of individuals opposing the Assad regime during the Syrian civil unrest in 2011 and 2012. At the time of his arrest in June 2020, M. was employed as an orthopedic surgeon in a hospital in Bad Wildungen, northern Hesse.
One of the most serious charges involved the fatal injection of a man, who died before the eyes of fellow detainees. M. was accused of administering a lethal injection while he was in training to become a specialist in orthopedics and trauma surgery. Other allegations included torture methods such as dousing body parts with flammable liquids and igniting them, leading to severe burns, including on the genitals of a young boy.
Furthermore, M. was accused of performing surgery to correct a leg fracture without adequately anesthetizing the patient first, an act he reportedly boasted about to his colleagues. These actions reflect a gross violation of medical ethics and human rights, leading the court to classify them as crimes of significant international concern.
The case against Alaa M. is a part of broader efforts to hold individuals accountable for atrocities committed during the Syrian conflict, highlighting the challenges faced by those seeking justice for war crimes. The verdict represents a step towards recognizing and addressing the suffering endured by countless victims of the Syrian regime's brutal tactics.
