Tesla Sues Former Engineer Over Alleged Theft of Trade Secrets

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

Tesla has initiated legal action against a former engineer, alleging that he misappropriated trade secrets related to robotic hand technology and utilized them in his newly established company, Proception. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

The engineer was employed at Tesla from August 2022 until September 2024, where he was involved in the development of advanced sensors for the company's humanoid robot, Optimus Bot. According to Tesla's complaint, he had access to sensitive proprietary information, including critical technical specifications.

Documents from the court indicate that the engineer gradually downloaded confidential data onto two personal mobile devices in the weeks leading up to his departure from Tesla. Shortly thereafter, he founded Proception, which announced the successful development of sophisticated robotic hands five months post-launch. These hands reportedly bear a striking resemblance to Tesla's designs intended for the Optimus Bot.

Tesla's lawsuit not only targets the former employee but also holds Proception accountable for utilizing the alleged stolen trade secrets. The automaker asserts that the engineer's actions represent not only a significant breach of trust but also a calculated attempt to exploit Tesla's investments and intellectual property for his own commercial gain.

As the case unfolds, it remains uncertain whether the allegations will be substantiated. However, Tesla's Optimus team had previously informed the engineer in August 2024 that access to data within Tesla's networks was being monitored, with checks in place for potential intellectual property theft.

Tesla's filing emphasizes the severity of the situation, indicating that the company believes it is facing not merely an instance of trade secret misappropriation, but a deliberate strategy to capitalize on its research and development efforts.
