The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation (SPSG) plays a pivotal role in enhancing the economic landscape of Potsdam and its surrounding areas, according to a new study. The research indicates that for every euro invested by the state of Brandenburg, there is a substantial return of over 5 euros, highlighting the significant economic impact of tourism linked to these cultural landmarks. Tourists visiting these historical sites contribute greatly to various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and retail. The SPSG reportedly generates an impressive return on investment of 5.54 euros for each euro allocated from the state budget, as detailed in preliminary findings shared by the foundation. This 'multiplier effect' refers to the secondary economic benefits realized from tourism activities. The study, commissioned by the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is slated for a comprehensive presentation in the summer at Sanssouci Park. IHK President Ina Hänsel emphasized the importance of this finding, stating that the relationship between cultural investment and economic prosperity in Brandenburg is evidently intertwined. She pointed out that the potential for further economic benefits across sectors like hospitality, transport, and retail remains to be fully harnessed. In light of these findings, the SPSG and IHK have appealed to local policymakers regarding budget considerations. They assert that the foundation is not only a cultural treasure but also an economic cornerstone for Brandenburg. The message conveyed is clear: funding for cultural initiatives represents an investment that yields significant returns for the economy, tourism sector, and the state's reputation. The study noted that Schloss Sanssouci, a UNESCO World Heritage site, serves as a major attractor for visitors. In 2023 alone, nearly 223,000 tourists visited this iconic palace in Potsdam, underscoring its status as a key driver of tourism. As part of the research, the University of Potsdam is currently conducting surveys among visitors to gather further insights. The findings are expected to spark discussions about future budget allocations, particularly in the context of cultural funding, as stakeholders recognize the far-reaching benefits that such investments can yield. The synergy between culture and economic growth is becoming increasingly apparent, prompting calls for a more robust integration of cultural assets into regional economic strategies.
