South Korean Appeals Court Acquits Opposition Leader Lee Jae-myung

Wed 26th Mar, 2025

An appeals court in South Korea has overturned a previous ruling that found Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main opposition party, guilty of violating election laws. This recent judgment by the Seoul High Court opens the door for Lee to potentially run in future presidential elections.

Lee, who leads the Democratic Party, expressed his gratitude towards the court's decision, asserting that the case against him was driven by political motives and that he has been fully exonerated. The original verdict, handed down by the Seoul Central District Court, had determined that Lee made false statements regarding a land development project during his tenure as mayor of Seongnam in 2021. He was sentenced to a one-year prison term, which was suspended for two years. If this sentence had been upheld, it would have hindered his ambitions to participate in the upcoming presidential race.

Following the appeals court's ruling, Lee addressed his supporters outside the court, criticizing the government for what he termed a misallocation of public resources in pursuing the case against him. He described the energy and resources expended on his prosecution as outrageous, given the clear outcome.

The political landscape in South Korea may soon shift further, as the country's Constitutional Court is expected to rule on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who faced controversy over a brief declaration of martial law in December. Should the court uphold the impeachment, South Korea would be required to conduct a snap presidential election within 60 days.

Lee, aged 61, previously competed against President Yoon in the 2022 presidential election, where he lost by the narrowest margin in the nation's history. His political career has not been without challenges; he survived a knife attack last year, requiring surgery after being stabbed during a public event.

The election violation case has garnered significant public interest, particularly as Lee is perceived as a leading contender for the presidency should Yoon's impeachment proceed. In addition to this case, Lee is facing various other legal challenges related to allegations of bribery and other offenses associated with a $1 billion property development scandal.
