Sony Unveils Xperia 1 VII: Enhanced Updates and Improved Performance

Tue 13th May, 2025

Sony has introduced the Xperia 1 VII, an evolution of its flagship smartphone that continues to stand out in the premium market with features such as a headphone jack and expandable storage. While the new model offers some improvements, the changes compared to its predecessor are subtle, requiring a closer look to appreciate.

One of the significant upgrades is the extended commitment to software updates. Sony now promises four years of Android version updates and six years of security patches, a notable improvement over previous models. However, this still falls short of competitors like Google and Samsung, which provide seven years of support for their flagship devices.

The Xperia 1 VII is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, complemented by a single configuration offering 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. Users can further expand the storage via a microSD card by up to 2 TB. The battery capacity remains at 5000 mAh, similar to the previous generation, which has proven to deliver impressive performance in real-world usage.

In terms of design, the Xperia 1 VII closely resembles its predecessor, featuring a sleek and flat profile measuring 16.2 x 7.4 x 0.82 cm and IP68-rated water and dust resistance. The device sports a 6.5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, capable of adjusting its refresh rate dynamically between 1 and 120 Hz based on the content being displayed.

Photography enthusiasts will find the rear camera setup appealing, featuring a triple-camera system that includes ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses. Sony has enhanced the ultra-wide camera with a larger 1/1.56-inch sensor, allowing for greater light capture, paired with a brighter f/2 lens compared to the previous model's f/2.2. The telephoto lens offers a genuine optical zoom with a focal length ranging from 85 to 170 mm. Despite the camera's strengths, the macro functionality remains limited as autofocus does not operate in this mode.

Overall, while the Xperia 1 VII brings some enhancements in processing speed and camera capabilities, the price point remains high at EUR1500. As the smartphone market continues to evolve, Sony's latest offering aims to cater to premium users while striving to keep pace with industry leaders in software support and technological advancements.
