Sony Launches Premium RX1R III Compact Camera with 61 Megapixels

Wed 16th Jul, 2025

Sony has unveiled the RX1R III, the latest iteration in its RX1R compact camera series. This advanced model boasts a remarkable 61-megapixel sensor equipped with back-illuminated technology, coupled with the powerful BIONZ XR image processor. The camera continues to feature the renowned ZEISS Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 lens, which has been a staple in its predecessors, ensuring excellent resolution throughout the image area and producing a smooth bokeh effect.

With a compact design measuring just 11.3 x 6.8 x 8.8 centimeters and a weight of approximately 500 grams, the RX1R III is aimed at photographers who prioritize portability without compromising on the image quality typically associated with full-frame sensors. However, its premium price tag of nearly EUR5,000 positions it as an exclusive option for serious photography enthusiasts.

Compared to its predecessor, the RX1R II, which launched in 2015 with a 42-megapixel sensor, the RX1R III introduces a significantly higher resolution and enhanced autofocus capabilities. This autofocus system is capable of tracking various subjects, including humans, animals, birds, insects, vehicles, and airplanes, making it versatile for different shooting scenarios. The autofocus performance is notable even in low-light conditions, with a working range extending down to -4 EV.

The body of the RX1R III is constructed from a magnesium alloy, reflecting a minimalist aesthetic. Although designed for street and travel photography, it lacks specific dust and moisture resistance features. The electronic viewfinder is positioned in the upper left corner of the rear panel, reminiscent of rangefinder cameras, but it offers a relatively low resolution of 2.36 megapixels and a magnification factor of 0.7x. The rear display shares the same resolution, yet it is fixed in place, unlike its predecessor's adjustable screen.

This new camera omits an optical low-pass filter, instead utilizing an anti-reflective coating on the sensor surface to enhance image quality, particularly in challenging lighting conditions. The AI-assisted autofocus system is designed to detect eyes, faces, and bodies, providing reliable tracking even when subjects are partially obscured.

For macro photography, a dedicated macro ring allows for close-up shots at a minimal distance of 20 centimeters. Additionally, the camera features a step-crop function that enables switching between focal lengths of 35, 50, and 70 millimeters, utilizing a portion of the sensor to simulate these focal lengths while maintaining image quality.

Battery life is rated at approximately 300 shots per charge under CIPA standards; however, actual performance may exceed this estimate based on user experience. Video recording capabilities are limited to 4K resolution, despite the sensor's higher potential.

Accessories for the RX1R III include a thumb grip that attaches to the hot shoe and resembles a film transport lever from vintage analog cameras. A lens hood is also available for separate purchase to enhance shooting versatility.

The RX1R III will be available for purchase starting July 2025, priced at EUR4,900.
