Söder Negotiates with Free Voters on Financial Package

Sat 15th Mar, 2025

In a critical period for financial negotiations in Germany, Bavaria's Minister President Markus Söder, representing the Christian Social Union (CSU), is engaged in discussions regarding a financial package that will be voted on both in the Bundestag and the Bundesrat next week. This package, which is a collaborative effort between the Union and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has stirred controversy within the ruling coalition.

Söder has played a significant role in the negotiations; however, his coalition partner, Hubert Aiwanger from the Free Voters party, has voiced opposition to the proposal. Aiwanger has publicly stated his disapproval of Bavaria's consent in the Bundesrat, creating a deadlock that needs urgent resolution.

Reports indicate that a coalition committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, where the leaders will convene to discuss the current impasse and seek a way forward. This meeting is crucial as it aims to address the divergent perspectives within the coalition and attempt to unify their stance on the financial package.

As the discussions unfold, both the State Chancellery and Aiwanger's Ministry of Economic Affairs have remained silent on the matter as of Friday evening, raising questions about the internal dynamics within the coalition.
