Trump Demands Iran's Unconditional Surrender and Proposes Leadership Oversight

U.S. President Donald Trump has formally ruled out any new agreement with Iran, instead insisting on the country's complete and unconditional surrender. In a message published on his online platform, Trump outlined that only after Iran's capitulation and the selection of what he described as a 'great and acceptable leader' would efforts begin to restore Iran, promising to make it 'greater, better, and stronger than ever before.' He emphasized collaboration with allied nations and regional partners to assist Iran in recovering from its current state of crisis.

The recent escalation of conflict follows coordinated air strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran. These operations resulted in the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other high-ranking officials. The Iranian government responded by launching retaliatory attacks targeting Israel, multiple Gulf states, and U.S. facilities in the region, significantly heightening regional tensions.

Amidst these developments, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that diplomatic efforts have commenced, with several nations initiating mediation to end hostilities. Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran's commitment to achieving lasting peace in the region, while also asserting the country's resolve to defend its sovereignty and dignity. He stressed that any mediation should target those responsible for underestimating the Iranian population and fueling the conflict.

President Trump has also indicated an intention to influence the selection of Iran's future leadership. In recent interviews with U.S. media outlets, he stated that American involvement is necessary in determining who leads Iran, referencing prior U.S. actions in Venezuela as a precedent. Trump explicitly rejected the possibility of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased Supreme Leader, assuming the top position, stating that he would prefer a candidate who could unite the country and promote peaceful governance.

The death of Ali Khamenei has created a significant power vacuum within Iran. While the country's Assembly of Experts is officially responsible for appointing a new Supreme Leader, various factions are vying for influence. Other potential candidates for the role include prominent cleric Sadegh Larijani, former president Hassan Rouhani, and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the Islamic Republic's founder.

In Germany, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for a swift resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the need for a regional peace framework that ensures the security and existence of all states, including Israel and Gulf nations. Merz underscored the importance of maintaining Iran's territorial integrity, warning against a scenario reminiscent of the prolonged Syrian civil war. He highlighted the risks of a power vacuum in Iran, which could lead to destabilizing proxy conflicts with consequences for European security, energy supplies, and migration patterns.

Chancellor Merz urged the United States and Israel to help establish conditions for democratic stability in Iran, including the maintenance of public order and essential services. He noted ongoing discussions with European partners aimed at exerting collective influence on the parties involved, in hopes of encouraging a peaceful and stable outcome for the region.
