Sigma Unveils Innovative 1.8 Zoom Lens and Retro Camera Launch

Sun 29th Jun, 2025

This week in photography news, Sigma has announced the upcoming release of its latest standard zoom lens, the 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art, set to launch in mid-July. This lens promises to break traditional norms with its impressive f-stop of 1.8, making it an attractive option for photographers seeking high-quality performance in low-light conditions.

The 17-40mm lens is designed specifically for APS-C cameras, where high-performance zoom lenses are increasingly rare. Weighing in at 535 grams with 17 elements arranged in 11 groups, this lens aims to provide sharp images across a variety of settings. Initial testing has revealed some chromatic aberrations at wide apertures, which are common with fast lenses, but the lens remains sharp when stopped down. Available for EUR999, the lens will be compatible with L-Mount, E-Mount, and X-Mount systems, with a Canon RF-Mount version to follow in August.

Another noteworthy development is the launch of the Echolens camera, available through Kickstarter, aimed at those seeking an analog shooting experience. Priced starting at $149, this retro-styled camera features a fixed 35mm equivalent lens and an 8-megapixel sensor. Designed for simplicity, the Echolens includes a mechanical photo counter and requires images to be transferred to a smartphone or other device for viewing, as it lacks a display. The camera is expected to ship in October 2025, and interest has already attracted over 1,000 backers on Kickstarter.

In other news, Sony has introduced a beta version of its "Camera Verify" system, which serves as an authenticity seal for photographs using the CAI/C2PA standard. Currently restricted to professional use, this system allows for the verification of images captured with select Sony cameras, enhancing trust in digital media. With future updates planned to include video support, this initiative underscores the growing demand for image verification in an era of misinformation.

Additionally, the Magic Lantern team has revived its project, offering unofficial firmware upgrades for Canon cameras. This new release supports models such as the EOS 200D and 750D, providing additional features for filmmakers. While the installation of such firmware is at the user's own risk, it presents an opportunity for enhanced functionality in older models.

Lastly, this week's podcast episode focuses on fetish photography, highlighting the creative and technical aspects of this niche. The discussion emphasizes the importance of respect and trust in capturing intimate moments, offering insights into the unique challenges and rewards of this genre.
