Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall Forecasted in Eastern Germany

Mon 21st Jul, 2025

The German Weather Service has issued a warning for intense rainfall expected in the eastern and northeastern regions of Germany. Areas affected include parts of Saxony, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as Berlin. The weather service has declared the highest alert level for regions between Rostock and Stralsund due to the potential for extreme rainfall.

Forecasts indicate that these areas could experience rainfall amounts ranging from 80 to 140 liters per square meter within a 12-hour period. Other affected regions in the four federal states may see slightly less, with predictions of up to 70 liters per square meter during prolonged rain. The severe weather warnings that were issued this morning will be in effect from the afternoon and may persist until midday Tuesday, depending on the area.

In Berlin, rain is expected to begin around midday. The weather service has cautioned that heavy rain could lead to rapid flooding of roads, underpasses, and basements, as well as pose risks of aquaplaning. Landslides are also a potential hazard. Motorists are advised to drive with caution due to the increased risk to life and safety. In the event of flooding or imminent water damage, individuals should evacuate basements immediately.

Severe weather conditions were already reported in parts of Germany on Sunday, where emergency services were actively responding to incidents. In Saarland, both police and firefighters were on high alert, with the Saarbrücken fire department logging 87 weather-related calls and the police reporting 66 incidents across the state. The majority of these incidents were due to fallen trees, flooded roads, and water entering buildings.

It is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed about weather conditions and to follow any guidance issued by local authorities. Preparedness can mitigate risks associated with severe weather events.
