Saxony's Interior Minister Criticizes New Afghan Evacuation Flights

The announcement of additional charter flights to bring vulnerable individuals from Afghanistan to Germany has drawn sharp criticism from Saxony's Interior Minister. As the country prepares for the anticipated election of Friedrich Merz as Chancellor, the decision to facilitate these flights has sparked a heated debate.

Interior Minister Armin Schuster expressed his disapproval of the planned flights, suggesting that it is inappropriate for a caretaker government to intensify efforts that the incoming government does not support. He characterized the actions of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who is set to step down, as reckless and potentially divisive within society.

Three flights are scheduled this month to transport Afghan nationals from Pakistan to Germany, specifically on April 16, 23, and 29. These flights aim to assist former local staff who worked with German institutions and other individuals facing significant threats, such as human rights advocates and female activists.

Earlier in March, officials from the Foreign Office indicated that there were still commitments to accept around 2,800 Afghan individuals into Germany. They asserted that these commitments were legally binding. A recent flight to Hannover successfully brought 174 Afghan evacuees, all of whom had received approval for their relocation.

According to the coalition agreement between the CDU, CSU, and SPD, there is a clear intention to conclude voluntary resettlement programs, including those for individuals from Afghanistan, and not to initiate new ones. Schuster pointed out that while the number of individuals being resettled may appear small in absolute terms, the influx is overwhelming for municipalities already struggling with housing and funding challenges.

Furthermore, he highlighted concerns regarding the integration of these newcomers, stating that the situation has become unmanageable, especially given the additional family members accompanying those identified as needing protection.

Schuster, who has been involved in coalition negotiations for his party, criticized the Foreign Office's approach under Baerbock, claiming that it has focused primarily on resettling thousands of individuals rather than addressing the issue of returning individuals who have committed serious crimes or pose a threat to public safety.
