Sabalenka Falls Short in Berlin as Wimbledon Approaches

Sat 21st Jun, 2025

The top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka has once again missed the opportunity to secure a grass-court title, as she was defeated in the semifinals of the Berlin tennis tournament. Competing in the iconic Steffi Graf Stadium, Sabalenka faced a formidable opponent in former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Just hours after a grueling match against Jelena Rybakina, Sabalenka struggled to find her rhythm against Vondrousova, who is known for her adeptness on grass. Vondrousova, who claimed silver at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, expressed her enjoyment of the underdog status as she advanced to the final, where she will face Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu. Wang secured her spot in the final with a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over Russian player Ljudmila Samsonova.

Despite her remarkable career, which includes 20 titles such as the US Open and two Australian Open championships, Sabalenka has yet to win a title on grass. As she prepares for the prestigious Wimbledon tournament, starting June 30, the pressure mounts for the Belarusian to finally capture a title on this surface.

The Berlin tournament, which boasts a prize purse of approximately one million euros, serves as a key preparatory event for many top female players ahead of the traditional Wimbledon competition. Unfortunately for German tennis, hopes were dashed early in the tournament when Eva Lys was eliminated, leaving Tatjana Maria as the last German contender with her recent title victory at the Queen's Club in London.

With Wimbledon just around the corner, the focus now shifts to the players who have successfully navigated the early rounds in Berlin, as they gear up for one of the most prestigious events in tennis.
