Russian Forces Capture Village in Dnipropetrovsk for First Time Since Ukraine Invasion

Mon 7th Jul, 2025

In a significant development, the Russian military has reportedly taken control of the village of Datschnoje located in the Dnipropetrovsk region of central Ukraine. This marks the first time since the onset of the Russian invasion in February 2022 that Russian forces have claimed territory in this area.

According to statements from the Russian army, they have successfully liberated Datschnoje, asserting that the village is now under their control. This announcement comes in stark contrast to prior reports from Ukrainian military units, which had indicated that they were successfully repelling Russian attacks on the same location just hours earlier.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides providing conflicting accounts regarding territorial gains, making independent verification challenging. On the previous day, a Ukrainian military spokesperson had declared that Datschnoje was still firmly under Ukrainian control, despite ongoing Russian offensives.

In the early hours of Monday, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that their forces managed to thwart several Russian attacks in and around Datschnoje, underscoring the ongoing volatility in the region.

Dnipropetrovsk is a crucial industrial and mining hub for Ukraine, and any further Russian advances in the area could have dire implications for Ukraine's already strained military capabilities and economic stability. Before the onset of the invasion, approximately three million residents lived in this region, with around one million in the regional capital, Dnipro, which has frequently been targeted by Russian drone and missile strikes.

The developments in Datschnoje illustrate the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the precarious situation Ukrainian forces face as they attempt to maintain control over strategic territories.
