The Repair Bonus program, initiated by the Berlin Senate to encourage the repair of household electronic devices, has been suspended due to an overwhelming number of applications. The allocated funding for 2025 ran out in less than six months, raising concerns about the program's future beyond this year.
Service providers like Neumann and Krause in Alt-Tempelhof, which handles repairs for a variety of household items--ranging from smartphones to washing machines--have expressed disappointment over the program's cessation. Employees stated that financial considerations often dictate whether customers opt for repairs or new purchases. The Repair Bonus was instrumental in shifting this balance, enabling many to choose repairs instead of replacements.
Originally, the Senate set aside EUR1.25 million for the Repair Bonus, which began in September 2024. However, by June 2025, the funds were nearly depleted, as approximately EUR463,000 had already been disbursed, leaving only EUR855,000 available for further claims. The Senate is currently exploring options to reallocate funds to honor pending applications.
According to the Senate's Environment and Climate Protection Department, the program successfully supported over 14,000 repairs, contributing to waste reduction, preservation of valuable resources, and decreased greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of new devices. Local businesses have also reported benefits from the initiative.
Despite its success, the program's abrupt end has raised concerns among stakeholders. Linda Vierecke, a member of the SPD, highlighted the program's positive impact and is advocating for its continuation in 2026. She emphasized that every euro invested in the program directly supports local repair businesses.
While the Senate has not confirmed whether the Repair Bonus will be included in future budgets, discussions are ongoing. The positive influence of the program on repair service demand, particularly among older customers who may have a sentimental attachment to their devices, has been acknowledged by various service providers.
Moreover, the program not only encouraged repairs for common devices like smartphones and dishwashers but also for less typical items, showcasing the wide range of benefits it provided.
As the situation develops, stakeholders remain hopeful for the program's revival, recognizing its importance in fostering a culture of sustainability and supporting local economies.
