Public Transport Disruptions in Lower Saxony Due to Strike Action

Wed 14th May, 2025

Lower Saxony, Germany - Commuters in various parts of Lower Saxony are facing significant disruptions in public transport services as the Verdi union has called for a warning strike among bus drivers. Affected regions include Braunschweig, Hildesheim, Lüneburg, Nordhorn, Stade, and Verden, as announced by the union.

The following transport companies are anticipated to experience service outages due to the strike:

  • KVG Braunschweig (covering the southeastern Braunschweig region, Salzgitter, Wolfenbüttel, and Helmstedt)
  • Regionalverkehr Hildesheim
  • KVG Lüneburg
  • KVG Stade (serving Stade, Buxtehude, and Cuxhaven)
  • Verdener Verkehrsgesellschaft
  • Nutzfahrzeuge Nordhorn
  • Omnibusbetriebe von Ahrendtschild in Zeven
  • Verkehrsbetriebe Grafschaft Hoya
  • Öffis Hameln-Pyrmont GmbH

Demonstrations have been planned in several cities, including Cuxhaven, Winsen (County of Harburg), and Zeven (County of Rotenburg), where union members will gather at operational facilities. Approximately 2,500 employees across Lower Saxony have been called to participate in this strike action.

This warning strike follows earlier disruptions in public transport that occurred in April. The current situation is part of an ongoing tariff dispute between the Verdi union and the employers' association, AVN. The previous round of negotiations, held on May 5, did not yield any results, and the next round is scheduled for May 28.

Notably, transport services in cities like Hannover and Bremen are not impacted by this strike, as they operate under different collective agreements.
