Proxmox Introduces Centralized Management with New Datacenter Manager

Fri 5th Dec, 2025

Proxmox Server Solutions has launched the first version of its Datacenter Manager, providing a centralized and unified platform for managing Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) instances and Proxmox Backup Servers. This new tool is designed to streamline the administration of complex Proxmox infrastructures, enabling users to oversee multiple clusters and nodes from a single web-based interface.

The Datacenter Manager consolidates key performance and status data from all connected Proxmox systems, including virtual environment nodes, clusters, and backup servers. The integrated dashboard offers real-time visibility into crucial metrics such as CPU, RAM, and storage utilization, simplifying infrastructure monitoring. A local cache ensures that system status information remains accessible even if the platform goes offline, allowing administrators to promptly identify bottlenecks and potential issues.

To address the needs of organizations with diverse teams and multi-tenant environments, the Datacenter Manager features customizable, role-based dashboards. These allow for tailored views focusing on specific resources or operational tags, while robust access controls ensure teams have appropriate visibility without exposing the underlying systems.

One of the standout features is the multicluster management capability, which enables seamless integration and control of independent Proxmox clusters and nodes. Administrators can perform live migrations of virtual machines across clusters without service interruptions--essential for load balancing and maintenance tasks. Centralized software-defined networking (SDN) tools with EVPN support facilitate the management of virtual networks (VNets) and overlays across multiple connected systems, reducing complexity in large-scale environments.

The platform also introduces centralized update management, offering a comprehensive overview of available updates for all Proxmox components. Administrators can distribute patches and updates to Proxmox VE and Backup Server instances directly from the Datacenter Manager. Additionally, a unified and secure shell access feature allows remote administration of all connected nodes through a single console.

Both the Datacenter Manager 1.0 and the updated Proxmox Backup Server 4.1 are based on Debian GNU/Linux "Trixie" 13.2, but utilize a custom Linux kernel (version 6.17.2) to support modern features. OpenZFS 2.3.4 is used for advanced storage management. Updates and maintenance can be performed via the web interface or terminal using standard package management tools.

Security remains a key consideration, given the central role of the Datacenter Manager. As it provides control over the entire Proxmox infrastructure, it could become a potential target for attacks. It is recommended to restrict unnecessary inbound connections, employ client-side encryption for backups, and utilize secure VPNs for remote access. The developer has acknowledged these security concerns and plans to implement additional safeguards in future releases.

The newly released Proxmox Backup Server 4.1 further enhances data protection for Proxmox environments. This open-source solution supports incremental, encrypted backups and now offers user-based bandwidth limits for backup and restore operations. This adjustment allows organizations to prioritize critical workloads or segregate production and testing environments efficiently. It also allows configuration of thread counts for disk reading and verification, optimizing performance based on available hardware and workload demands. S3 storage integration has been improved, with administrators now able to limit bandwidth for backup and restore activities to remote S3 endpoints, helping mitigate network congestion in shared environments.

Both the Datacenter Manager and Proxmox Backup Server are distributed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 (GNU AGPLv3) and are available for free download and use. Access to the Enterprise Repository, which offers additional support and updates, starts from EUR540 per year for the Backup Server, with higher support tiers available. The Datacenter Manager requires that at least 80% of connected remote systems have a valid Basic or higher subscription to access the Enterprise Repository and official support.

With the introduction of the Datacenter Manager and enhancements to the Backup Server, Proxmox strengthens its position as a comprehensive, open-source solution for virtualized data center management, catering to the growing needs of enterprises seeking efficient, scalable, and secure infrastructure administration.
