Protests Erupt in Kreuzberg Against Fence Construction Around Görlitzer Park

Mon 23rd Jun, 2025

In Kreuzberg, a significant demonstration is underway against the planned construction of a fence around Görlitzer Park. Hundreds of individuals have gathered to voice their opposition to the enclosure, which they believe will exacerbate existing social issues in the area. The protest, titled 'Tag Z - The Görli Stays Open!', commenced at Spreewaldplatz and is expected to draw substantial crowds, with initial estimates indicating around 500 participants.

The event began around 5 PM with a small group of around 30 people, but organizers anticipate larger numbers as the evening progresses. The demonstration aims to challenge both the fence installation and the scheduled nighttime closure of the park. A speaker at the event emphasized the importance of resistance and community action in addressing local concerns.

As part of the protest, there will also be musical performances, and a march is planned from Spreewaldplatz to the construction site at Görlitzer Park at 6 PM. Law enforcement is closely monitoring the situation, deploying approximately 150 officers to ensure public safety during the event.

The debate surrounding the fencing of Görlitzer Park has been ongoing for over two years. The local government, led by Mayor Kai Wegner and the CDU party, views the fence as a critical measure to combat issues related to drug use, violence, and littering in the park. In contrast, district officials advocate for alternative solutions, such as increased social services, as part of a collaborative action plan. This plan includes funding for community initiatives alongside the fence construction.

Opposition to the fence has been mounting, with residents and activists expressing concerns that such measures will not address the root causes of the issues they face. Many community members argue for more humane and socially responsible approaches, emphasizing that a fence could further alienate vulnerable populations.

Activists have been preparing for 'Tag Z' for some time, with reports indicating that some have engaged in training sessions aimed at resisting the fence's construction. This includes strategies for sabotaging the fencing efforts and supporting those apprehended by law enforcement during protests.

As the situation continues to develop, the Kreuzberg community remains vigilant and committed to advocating for their vision of an open and inclusive public space at Görlitzer Park.
