Demonstrators Take to the Water to Challenge Swimming Ban in the Spree River

In a bold act of protest, a group of demonstrators gathered near Berlin's Museum Island to challenge a century-old swimming ban in the Spree River. Organized by the Flussbad Berlin association, the event, dubbed the 'Mitschwimm-Demo' (swimming demonstration), is set to take place on a Tuesday afternoon, beginning with a rally at Schinkelplatz before participants enter the water.

The swimming ban, in place for 100 years, has faced increasing scrutiny from Berlin residents who believe it is time for a change. The demonstrators aim to express their desire for access to the river through a peaceful yet impactful swimming event. This is not the first such demonstration; a previous swim occurred in June, attracting hundreds of participants. Despite these efforts, the organizers expressed disappointment that their voices have not yet prompted any action from local authorities or the Berlin Senate to reconsider the longstanding prohibition.

While the protest is planned, the feasibility of swimming depends on weather conditions and the current quality of the river water, which could affect the safety and legality of the activity. The organizers remain hopeful that this demonstration will galvanize public support and encourage officials to revisit the ban on swimming in the Spree.

The Spree River runs through the heart of Berlin, and many argue that allowing swimming would enhance the city's recreational offerings and improve public access to its waterways. As the debate continues, the demonstrators are committed to raising awareness about their cause and advocating for a more inclusive approach to urban water use.
