Potsdam Residents to Vote on Mayor's Potential Dismissal

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

In a significant political development, citizens of Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, are set to vote on the fate of their mayor, Mike Schubert, on May 25. The upcoming referendum follows a series of controversies surrounding Schubert, who is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

The local government has confirmed that from April 14 to May 3, registered voters will receive notifications regarding the vote. The key question posed to voters will be whether they support the dismissal of Mayor Mike Schubert, with responses required to be cast as either 'Yes' or 'No'. Polling stations will operate from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with approximately 144,000 eligible voters expected to participate.

Schubert's position has come under scrutiny due to a scandal involving VIP tickets, which has raised questions about his integrity. Furthermore, his leadership style has faced criticism from various political factions, prompting calls for his resignation.

The decision to initiate a citizen's referendum was made by the city council last Wednesday, which also included demands for Schubert to step down. Following this decision, Schubert had the option to withdraw from the citizen's vote within a week. However, he chose to allow the electorate to have the final say, citing his direct election as a reason for his stance.

As the date of the vote approaches, the political climate in Potsdam is charged with anticipation, as residents prepare to express their views on Schubert's leadership and the future direction of their local government.
