Potsdam City Council Votes on Motion to Dismiss Mayor Schubert

Wed 2nd Apr, 2025

The Potsdam City Council is set to vote on a motion aimed at the dismissal of Mayor Mike Schubert, who has faced significant criticism regarding his leadership. This motion reflects growing dissatisfaction among city representatives and could potentially lead to a referendum allowing citizens to decide his fate.

The council requires a two-thirds majority to pass the motion. If successful, the decision would not immediately remove Schubert from office; rather, it would initiate a process where voters could express their views. Should Schubert choose not to accept the City Council's decision, a public referendum would be organized.

Importantly, the mayor has the option to forgo the referendum within a week of the council's vote, in which case he would automatically be regarded as dismissed from his role. Schubert has previously indicated his willingness to submit to the public's judgment, reflecting a commitment to democratic principles.

This move comes in the wake of a similar situation in Frankfurt, where former Mayor Peter Feldmann was ousted through a public referendum in 2022. The current situation in Potsdam highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local government leaders and the increasing demand for accountability from elected officials.

The outcome of the vote today will not only determine Schubert's immediate political future but also set a precedent for how local governance is held accountable in the face of public discontent.
