Porsche's Electric Boat Sets Speed Record at Monaco Energy Challenge

Thu 17th Jul, 2025

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom, an electric sports boat, has achieved a remarkable speed record during the prestigious Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Competing in the 'Speed' category, the boat recorded an average speed of 49.84 knots (approximately 92.3 km/h) over a distance of 2 kilometers, outpacing all its competitors.

The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, founded in 2006 by the Prince of Monaco, aims to promote emission-free propulsion technologies through competitive events. The challenge is supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, which focuses on environmental research. Participants include boats powered by sustainable energy sources, such as electric and hydrogen vessels, competing across various classes, including Energy Class, AI Class, Sea Lab, and Open Sea Class, to showcase and compare the effectiveness of their propulsion systems.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom, measuring 8.67 meters in length and 2.49 meters in width, participated in the Open Sea Class. During the competition, the goal was to achieve the highest possible average speed over a designated 2-kilometer stretch. The collaboration between Frauscher and Porsche involved utilizing an unmodified production model of the Fantom 850, equipped with a closed foredeck. This model is powered by an adapted drive system derived from the Porsche Macan, specifically designed for use in this electric boat.

The propulsion system features a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PSM), an 800-volt high-voltage battery, and a control unit, delivering a total output of 400 kW. The drive system offers four operational modes: Docking, Range, Sport, and Sport Plus. The combination of this advanced drive system and the boat's lightweight, streamlined hull enabled the Fantom 850 to achieve a record-breaking average speed of 92.3 km/h, marking the fastest speed recorded in the history of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge.

The Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom represents a collaborative effort between the automotive manufacturer Porsche and the Austrian boat builder Frauscher, combining their expertise to create a cutting-edge vessel. Porsche provides the complete propulsion system, including the high-voltage battery, while Frauscher handles the final assembly, logistics, and after-sales service. The boat is assembled at Frauscher's facility in Ohlstorf, Upper Austria.

This achievement not only highlights advancements in electric propulsion technologies but also underscores the growing importance of sustainability in maritime industries.
