In a routine traffic control on the A2 highway, authorities made an unexpected discovery involving exotic animals. Early in the morning of May 18, 2025, officers stopped a Romanian transport vehicle, leading to the uncovering of several animals without the required travel documents.
Among the animals found in the cargo area were a great argus pheasant, a crowned pigeon, a green aracari, a hunting hawk, six koi carp, and two sturgeons. All these creatures lacked necessary veterinary certificates and permits related to species protection, which rendered the continuation of their journey illegal.
The police subsequently transported the animals to a shelter in Hannover, where they will receive appropriate care. The authorities are now investigating whether this case involves a planned transport operation or illegal animal trafficking. The investigation has been referred to the relevant specialized authorities for further examination.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding wildlife trafficking and the importance of adhering to legal requirements for the transport of exotic species. The police are urging anyone with information related to this case to come forward to assist in the investigation.
