Police Shut Down Party Using Coffins as Coolers in Mexico City

Sun 18th May, 2025

Authorities in Mexico City have intervened to shut down a party where coffins were reportedly repurposed as coolers for beverages. This unusual incident occurred in the Cuauhtémoc district, where police responded to multiple emergency calls from concerned neighbors.

According to local officials, approximately 800 teenagers were found attending the unauthorized gathering. The mayor of the Cuauhtémoc area, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, shared images on social media depicting an open coffin, a bucket, and stacked chairs in what appeared to be a kitchen-like setting.

The gathering had been organized through social media platforms, and reports indicated that at least five youths under the age of 18 were discovered unconscious on the street due to alcohol poisoning. The authorities noted that the venue lacked proper emergency exits and that the fire extinguishers present were not operational.

One individual was apprehended in connection with the event. The party location is situated near the famous Plaza Garibaldi, known for its traditional mariachi performances, which further adds a layer of irony to the situation.

This incident raises concerns about safety regulations and the management of social events, particularly those involving minors. Local officials are likely to review safety protocols in similar venues to prevent such occurrences in the future.
